Mac OSX on Vaio VGN-NR220E

Ok, for excuse, the reason I put Mac OSX on my Sony Vaio VGN-NR220E because it came with Vista, and try to "upgrade" it to XP didn't give a good result, XP keep giving me BSOD crash at least once a day for many unknown reasons, the only reason I know, Sony doesn't give drivers support for this laptop on XP. Suck.... Msoft + Sony mafia, is that XP just too old for this not so advance laptop ?.

and nothing to loose, I grab MacOSX XxX 10.4.11 ISO from the corner of internet and give it a try on this laptop, the result, not so good, but worth to try.

- Screen only 1024 x 768, compare to what is on this device, 1280 x 800.
- Marvel Yukon gigabit ethernet is working, just replace value inside /System/Library/Extension/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleYukon/Contents/Info.plist from 0x436211AB to 0x435311AB
- Sound work using AppleAzaliaAudio.kext
- Wireless doesnt work, no idea how to fix it.

and final conclusion, still not decide yet, if I want to keep this version of MacOSX, or change it to Leopard base on this review, or just leave with XP and getting use to it with BSOD once or twice a day, but still, no thanks to Damn Vista, I consider it as evil in OS world.

ps : I wrote this post using safari 3.11 on my Sony Vaio MacOSX

UPDATE : My Sony VGN-NR220E now work fine using OSX Kalyway 10.5.2, look comment below for the explanation.

Use ubuntu 8.04. I've got the same model and everything works ok and almost out of the box (some work needed to make the wireless work, but nothing too hard)

Hey Utems, I also have the Nr220E and I am trying to get OSx on it. I have been using iAtkos i5 and have tried every possible combination but cannot get it done right. It installs properly and then on reboot when I hit -v I can see that it finds the boot device Ok,it then says starting the login application, but then I get a blue screen and within a sec it hangs with grey lines at the bottom and on the right. Can you help me with this.

hey pals, here is the step ( I wrote it on the other forum, look on this link : insanelymac forum)

the BIG POINT on my case, dont use iatkos, use Kalyway 10.5.2 instead.

-----

My Installation is using Kalyway 10.5.2, with speedstepkernel, and select the Video Graphic Intel GMA3100.

during first boot, pressed F8 and boot with option -s, once in terminal mode, remove the original AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext and boot the Macs till finish all initial setup.

then, download SwitchResX program, and add 1280-800 resolution, and then reboot again.

after the system up again, (its still on 1024-768 resolution), install the Kext that you supplied above, after make sure I have all other AppleIntelGMAX3100* files (AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext, AppleIntelGMAX3100GA.plugin, AppleIntelGMAX3100GLDriver.bundle, AppleIntelGMAX3100VADriver.bundle) , I reboot the machine, and dangg.... I GOT GMAX3100 work with QE/CI enabled.

I use iatkos 4 before, and the result is not the same with kalyway 10.5.2, I am not sure which part was wrong, but for sure, your case, when it come with blue or gray screen, that is the time when OSX try to initialize the X3100 graphic card, and failed.

so my suggestion, use kalyway 10.5.2, follow the instructions like I wrote on the forum, and your biggest issue on OSX with Sony VGN-NR220 which is the graphic card, will be solved.

How you delete the kext, and how you can change the resolution with switchresx

- to delete a kext, before OSX start, press F8 and type -s then enter.
- Then type mount -uw / this is to give you rw access on / directory
- kext is all under /System/Library/Extensions/ you can delete said kext above just using command line rm -f foldername, kext is a folder not just a file name.

Where can i download the wireless driver?

Is there any way to make the memory stick reader to work?

Hello Joe, the stock atheros wifi card is not supported by osx, so had to change it with compatible ones, and memory stick slot is not working too.

Does anyone know how you can change the Brightness in OSX?
Also whenever i try to change the screen resolution there is a mirror effect on the bottom of the screen. Is there any fix for that?
I searched all over Google but to no avail
